Wapassou: Wapassou CD

WAPASSOU is one of the most original French Progressive rock bands ! Recorded in 1974, the eponymous opus of keyboardist Freddy BRUA and friends creates a music in the same vein as the first albums by PINK FLOYD, AMON DÜÜL II, CZAR or ASH RA TEMPEL. It remains deeply original though, for instance thanks to the fact that there's no rhythm section here. Except for some moments where local hero Benoît MOERLEN is invited to play percussions, drums and bass are replaced by guitar. This curious instrumentation, with the haunting vocals of Karin NICKERL on top, produces throbbing, if not depressing, melodies. This chamber music like no-other is now linked by some specialists with a trend that would see the light of day twenty years later: post-rock ! The numerous flute, guitar, clarinet and sitar parts are an ideal counterpart to a true rock feeling. It also includes some guests. As a bonus, the Musea reissue includes two tracks originally issued as singles. On the following albums, WAPASSOU reaffirmed its originality: the formula is then based on keyboards, violin and guitar combinations and structures. BACH and WAGNER seem to be the obvious references here. "Salammbô" (1977) was inspired by the works of Gustave FLAUBERT. The enchanting ambiences develop along repetitive organ and violin sequences, giving this music a kind of dark solemnity and symphonism. Not to be missed !
