Mummi Kutoo was a completely obscure group until Ektro Records dug up the masters to their eponymous 1975 album and put it on CD with nine bonus tracks in 2003. Since then the cult around this Finnish agricultural psychedelic group has grown to new levels, making original copies of the LP nearly impossible to find.
Come 2016, Ektro Records together with Svart Records present the Mummi Kutoo album on vinyl for the first time in 41 years. Built together with the band, the reissue is expanded with a full LP of unreleased material from the band’s demo archives. Carefully picked and remasterered for vinyl, these 18 tracks date from the era after the first album. The band had plans for a second album and demoed their new material extensively, but Love Records went bankrupt before studio sessions could take place.
Often referred to as a rural version of Dungen, Mummi Kutoo is an essential discovery for fans of eclectic, somewhat psychedelic folk rock – think Incredible String Band, Roy Harper, early Pink Floyd… Employing instruments like piano, banjo, tuba and mandolin, the album’s soft dreamscape exhibits a thorough understanding of various sub-genres such as melodic orchestral pop, fragile coffeehouse jazz and light AM country.
