“Harvemmin suomalaisten musiikkiliikkeiden levyhyllyillä viihtyvä, alkujaan chicagolainen, The Flying Luttenbachers korjaa tilanteen. Tai oikeastaan sen tekee Karkia Mistika levy-yhtiö Porista, jonka kuningasajatus on uudelleenjulkaista alunperin ugEXPLODE/Troubleman Unlimited:n vuonna 2002 julkaisema ja loppuunmyyty täyspitkä ”Infection and Decline”. The Flying Luttenbachers on itseasiassa Weasel Walter plus kaverit, joita olikin yhtyeen reilun 15-vuotisen historian aikana useita (Hal Russell, Ken Vandermark, Jeb Bishop, Fred Lonberg-Holm, Mick Barr, jne.). Tämä myös osaltaan vaikutti siihen, että levytetty tuotanto on aika värikästä: noiseblackmetallin ja freejatsin kautta sooloprogeiluun. Tässä remasteroidussa levyssä yhdistyvät lähinnä psykopaattinen raivoisa proge ja grindaava bläkkis, välillä päästellään höyryjä vapaamuotoisemmin ja kolkutellaan hyperaktiivista no wavea. Kaksi basistia (Jonathan Hischke ja Alex Perkolup) pistävät ranttaliksi Weaselin pärskiessä rumpujen takana. Mukaan levylle on mahdutettu myös kuusi kipeää live-kappaletta, joissa osoitetaan Walterin ja kumppanusten elinvoimaisuus. Koko levy on yksi helvetin tyrmäävä pakkaus ainetta, joka pistää aivokäyrät näyttöjen ulkopuolelle samalla rikkoen upouuden sydämen tahdistajasi. Tämä – niin kuin The Flying Luttenbachers muutenkaan – ei ole vitsi, vaan totisinta totta.”
For nearly 20 years Chicago-bred musician Weasel Walter has been building a career out of destruction. Mind you, his particular brand of chaos isn’t just confined to the obliteration of sonic niceties. The guy also wholeheartedly believes in annihilating the stifling clichés, trends, genre definitions, sociological phenomena, and other bullshit that stand in the way of pure artistic expression. And for a while there, his work literally revolved around a concept about the world’s self-inflicted demise.
In light of this, Infection and Decline, the 2002 studio album by Walter’s now-deceased Flying Luttenbachers, could be likened to a violent, sweeping plague. It commands a rather imposing and important spot in the band’s extensive catalog. Originally coreleased by the indie-de-jour Troubleman Unlimited, the landmark LP found the group jettisoning (but somehow, simultaneously digesting) the free-jazz-cum-no-wave-cum-black-metal of its previous efforts in favor of what the ensemble’s leader referred to as “brutal prog.” For this record only, the dueling basses of Alex Perkolup and Jonathan Hischke fornicated with, tore holes through, and crumpled atop Walter’s spastic, high-tuned drums. Walloping pieces such as “Infektion” and the epic “Elimination of Incompetence” are harsh and unruly yet carefully composed explosions of distortion and greasepaint, with hints of comic-book humor and absurdity lurking at the edges. Elsewhere the trio salutes its spiritual antecedents via a cover of Magma’s 1976 sci-fi classic “De Futura.”
Of course, that kind of intensity wasn’t meant to last. This version of the Luttenbachers dissolved shortly after issuing Infection and Decline, when Walter moved from the Midwest to California. (He retired the band completely in 2007 and currently resides in New York.) Thus, it’s a real treat that Pori, Finland’s Karkia Mistika label has brought the disc back from the dead and fortified it with six concurrent live tracks. So if you weren’t paying attention the first time (or even if you were), make haste and get hip to this blast from the relatively recent past. Because the end is near, comrades. Don’t you think you deserve to be jolted from your drooling stupor before we all go up in flames?
